Uneven Skin

When it comes to skin tone and texture, everyone wants to get even. But that's often easier said than done since battling enlarged pores, dullness, random roughness and discoloration is often a matter of battling heredity.

Learn about Uneven Skin

That's because one of the culprits of uneven, undesirable-skin texture is excess oil. That's because oily skin has a tendency to produce very little sebum—the cellular 'glue' that binds the skin together. So dead skin cells tend to solidify and "stick" to the skin's surface for longer than normal. The result is uneven patches of skin texture as well as enlarged pores. And while pore size is hereditary, they can appear to be larger due to sun damage or because they're clogged with excess oil and sebum. Another unavoidable factor—the slowing of our skin's cellular turnover due to aging—which can result in a build-up of dead surface skin cells…and a dull, lackluster complexion.

The other culprit: Melanin, the can't-live-with-it, can't-live-without-it substance that results in the pigmentation of skin cells. The simple fact is that some areas of the skin just have less melanin than other areas. As the cells containing more melanin come in contact with prolonged periods of sunlight, they become darker. Other areas with less melanin or that have less exposure to the sun, remain lighter. If they're not exfoliated regularly, the patches with the most melanin can darken considerably when compared to areas with less melanin.

What you can do:

  • Exfoliate using glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids which shed surface skin cells and help smooth skin texture.
  • Use a broad spectrum sunblock with an SPF of 30 and make sure it contains a physical sun block like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

What to avoid:

  • Unprotected exposure to sunlight, especially in the late morning and early afternoon hours (11:00am – 3:00pm).
  • Products that make skin too dry or too oily. Drying out skin only results in flakiness or more oil production while greasy products make pores appear to be larger than they are.
