Your Concerns

Redness / Rosacea

If the blush on your cheek isn't so innocent, you may have rosacea. A chronic inflammatory condition of the capillaries and larger blood vessels involved in facial flushing, rosacea is, in essence, a permanent blush.

Learn about Redness/Rosacea

Characterized by redness in the cheeks and nose, bumps or pimples, visible blood vessels and watery eyes, rosacea affects over 14 million Americans. Although the exact causes are unknown, heredity and environmental factors are thought to play a key role. Rosacea is more commonly found among those with lighter skin and blonde hair/blue eyes, especially between 30 and 50 years of age.

What you can do:

  • Keep a diary of flushing episodes. Since rosacea is often triggered by specific foods, rises in body temperature and exposure to the sun, this will help you identify your individual triggers.
  • Treat your face with TLC. Use a mild, non-abrasive cleanser and rinse with lukewarm water. Never pull, tug or use rough washcloths.
  • Talk to your physician about oral and topical antibiotics. Both can help due to their anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Check out www.rosacea.org for more information.

What to avoid:

  • First and foremost, sun exposure! Use a broad-spectrum, light-textured sunscreen of at least SPF 30 every day (even if you don't feel like you're getting sun). Make sure that it contains a physical sunblock like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, plus antioxidants to protect against environmental hazards.
  • Spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol and hot drinks. Sticking to a mild diet could help keep flushing episodes in check.
  • Extreme temperatures, both hot and cold. Make sure you don't get overheated, especially while exercising or outside in the summer months.
  • Rubbing and scrubbing. Handle your sensitive skin gently and minimally, and avoid the rough stuff, like grainy exfoliators or abrasive pads.
