Excess Fat
Most of us have fallen into the same mythical thinking. If we could just get our (insert body part here) into shape, we'd look great. So we set out to do exercises that target that body part...with little or no results.
Learn About Excess Fat
Fitness experts agree that spot reducing doesn't work. The reason: Our muscles are not the issue, body fat is. When our stomach, hips or thighs look flabby, it's because the muscles are covered up with fat. And genes and gender determine where and how we put it on.
Men generally gain fat in their stomachs first; women, in their hips and thighs, at least until they get older. Then they begin to gain fat in the belly as well. Unfortunately, the first place we put fat on is also the last place it will come off. That means we can do sit-ups or crunches for hours without slimming our stomachs. We may develop a six-pack. We just can't see it because our abs remain covered in fat. Doing crunches, sit-ups, leg lifts and all those other spot-specific exercises simply doesn't reduce overall body fat enough to reach that stubborn area.
What you can do:
- Start a regular cardio exercise program and stick to it. Start out small (20 minutes a day) and sneak in extra exercise as often as possible. For example, take the stairs instead of the elevator or park at the far end of the parking lot.
- Make small adjustments to your daily diet and you'll see big changes. If you can't live without your daily latte, switch to a skim latte and you'll drop eight pounds in a year…with no effort.
- Include cardio and strength-training in your workout routine to reduce the overall amount of fat on your body.
What to avoid:
- Overloading on non- or low-fat foods. These are often packed with sugar and other high-calorie ingredients to enhance the flavor.
- Focusing exclusively on lifting weights. While you'll build muscle, you won't be getting enough of a calorie burn to lower your overall body fat. Make sure to include cardiovascular too.
- Skipping meals, especially breakfast. Not only does your body go into starvation mode, slowing your metabolism, but you end up getting so hungry that you binge when you finally do eat.
- Trying to lose too much weight too quickly. Restricting your food intake or exercising for hours each day becomes impossible over time. As difficult as it is to be patient, focus on slow and steady weight loss to better your chances of longterm success.
