Age spots usually begin to appear on sun-exposed areas such as the back, chest, arms and hands in your early 30s. Although they may look similar to moles, the two are very different. Moles are genetically predetermined, while age spots are the result of cumulative sun exposure throughout your life.
A product of sun damage, they result from an overproduction of melanin as the skin attempts to protect itself from UV light. These flat lesions are tan or brown and appear most frequently on the cheekbones, temples, nose, shoulders, décolleté and hands.
What you can do:
- Cover up. Apply sun protection every time you go outside, all year long. Use a broad spectrum sunblock with an SPF of 30 and make sure it contains a physical sun block like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Remember to apply sunblock to the scalp (for thinning hair), ears, lips, neck, décolleté and hands.
- Try a topical fading cream or gel that contains 2% Hydroquinone to gradually lighten spots.
What to avoid:
- Unprotected exposure to sunlight, especially in the late morning and early afternoon hours (11:00am – 3:00pm).
